Protopic ointment is an anti-inflammatory ointment for external use.

Indications:

In adults 0.03% and 0.1% Protopic ointment is used, in children aged from 2 to 16 years 0.03% ointment is used.

• Treatment of atopic dermatitis (moderate to severe) in cases of insufficient response or contraindication to conventional treatments.

How to take, course of treatment and dosage:

Adults and children over 2 years of age apply Protopic ointment in a thin layer to the affected areas of the skin. The product can be applied to all parts of the body, including the face and neck, in skin folds. Do not apply to mucous membranes or under occlusive dressings.

Administration in children (2 years of age or older) and adolescents under 16 years of age

Treatment should begin with application of 0.03% Protopic ointment twice a day. Duration of treatment according to this scheme should not exceed three weeks. Thereafter the frequency of application is reduced to once a day and the treatment is continued until the lesions are completely cleared.

Use in adults and adolescents 16 years of age and above

Treatment should begin with 0.1% Protopic twice a day and continue until the lesions are completely clear. With improvement, it is possible to reduce the frequency of application of 0.1% ointment or to switch to 0.03% Protopic® ointment.

In case of recurrence of symptoms, treatment with Protopic 0.1% ointment twice daily should be resumed. If the clinical picture allows, an attempt should be made to reduce the frequency of use, or to use a lower dosage of 0.03% Protopic ointment.

Use in elderly people (65 years and over)

No special indications for use in elderly people. Improvement is usually seen within one week after initiation of therapy. If there are no signs of improvement on the background of therapy within two weeks, it is necessary to consider change of therapy.

Treatment of exacerbations

Protopic ointment can be used as a short-term or long-term therapy in the form of intermittent repeated courses. Treatment of the affected skin areas is carried out until the clinical manifestations of atopic dermatitis have completely disappeared. An improvement is usually seen during the first week of treatment.

If signs of improvement are not seen within two weeks of starting the ointment, other further treatment options should be considered. Treatment should be resumed at the first signs of an exacerbation of atopic dermatitis.

Prevention of exacerbations

In patients with a history of frequent (more than 4) exacerbations, maintenance treatment with Protopic is recommended to prevent exacerbations and to extend the duration of remission.

The appropriateness of maintenance therapy is determined by the efficacy of the preceding therapy according to the standard schedule (2 times a day) for a maximum of 6 weeks.

For maintenance treatment, Protopic ointment should be applied twice a week (e.g. on Monday and Thursday) to the skin areas usually affected by an exacerbation.

The interval between applications should be at least 2-3 days.

In adults and adolescents 16 years of age and older 0.1% Protopic ointment and in children (2 years of age and older) 0.03% Protopic ointment are used. If signs of an exacerbation appear, switch to the usual treatment regimen with Protopik® ointment (see section "Treatment of exacerbations").

After 12 months of maintenance treatment, the clinical course should be evaluated and the continuation of prophylactic use of Protopic ointment should be considered in children to assess the clinical course and then the need for continued maintenance treatment should be considered.
